5 Ways to Get Overlooked

When Applying to College

By Grace Fleming, About.com

Attending an award ceremony? Applying to college? If you really want to fade into the crowd and be overlooked when it comes time for teachers and professors to hand out those coveted recommendations and awards, you should practice some of these terrible habits. The rejection letters will flow into your mailbox!

1. Forget Your Homework a Lot

Nothing annoys a teacher more than students forgetting homework a lot. Everybody goofs once in awhile, but students who make a habit out of leaving homework at home quickly gain a reputation as slackers who really don't care about getting into college. You don't want to get a reputation like this when it comes to asking for recommendations--and that day will come!

2. Be Habitually Late

Students who are always on time are the students who earn the best grades, win scholarships, and get into great colleges. There's a reason for this! When you arrive late for class, you demonstrate that you don't care about the rules, you interrupt the teacher, and you just come across as rude.

3. Mispronounce a Lot

Have you ever been around someone who mispronounces a word on a regular basis? It is so annoying and it even makes the person sound less educated than he or she really is. There are many words that are difficult to pronounce, so you should look them over and find out how to pronounce them correctly, before you find out too late and cause yourself some real embarrassment at an interview.

4. Procrastinate

Procrastination is a real reputation killer. If you constantly put things off until the last moment or day, people will notice and begin to think that your are unreliable. Another problem with procrastination? People who put things off are playing with fire. At some point they always bring about disaster.

5. Create Distractions in Class

Have you seen kids who fall asleep in class? Ever seen anybody drool while dozing in class? Have you ever sat behind somebody with a growling stomach, a burping problem--or worse? They don't really come across as college material, do they?
