Icebreaker - I Have a Confession!

By Grace Fleming, About.com

Study Group Size:

Best for large group

Materials Needed:

Index cards
pen or pencil

Planning Time:

5 minutes

Icebreaker Rules:

Distribute index cards to each group member. Each student should take 5 or 10 minutes to think of something that he or she has done that is unusual. Each member will jot down the experience on the card. The objective is to think of something that you believe nobody else in the group has done.

Examples:

  • “I’ve eaten rattlesnake meat.”
  • “I swam with a manatee.”
  • “I won a writing contest.”

After everyone has written something down, collect all the cards in a pile. Have one group member (or a teacher) pick one card out of the pile at a time and read the sentence aloud.

Don’t confess right away! The group will try to guess which group member has written each sentence. You will learn some interesting facts about your group members, and you may be surprised to discover that you have something very unusual in common with another group member.
