Icebreakers for Study Groups

By Grace Fleming, About.com

If you're meeting with a new class or study group, you might be worried that nobody will speak up when it comes time to make introductions. By using one of these icebreakers, you're sure to get your group talking. You might even find out some things that will astound and amaze you about your own group members!

1. I'll Never Tell!

In this activity, group members will volunteer to answer questions that other students did not want to answer about themselves! You'll be surprised by the things other students will reveal. This activity is a good confidence-building tool.

2. Totem Pole

What animal do you resemble? Do you have a physical characteristic or a personality trait that is often attributed to a certain member of the animal kingdom? Build a totem pole with your teammates, and establish a strong group identity.

3. I Confess!

Have you done something so unique that you're certain nobody else has tried it? You'll have fun sharing your experience in this group activity. Every team member will reveal something special they've done--but they won't confess to it right away.

4. Chain Reaction

In this icebreaker you'll find out how many traits and experiences you share with other group members. Try not to break the chain in this fast-moving game, and learn how much you have in common with your study partners.

5. Wanted Posters

If your group has been charged with creating something artistic, you might want to start with this activity. You'll find out which team members have real talents, and discover some other interesting tidbits about your group members at the same time!
